Money Tip5/9/08Mother’s Day Gift Ideas Jewelry, flowers, slippers, and the occasional kitchen gadget are all mainstay Mother’s Day gifts, but they may not be what your mom most wants. Make the moms in your life feel marvelous this year without buying into the commercial hype that so often surrounds the day. In fact, the most cherished gifts are often those that cost little or no money. Here are some ideas for you to consider. Take Time. Perhaps more than anything else, mom’s value time, so a gift that gives them more of it will always be welcomed. Agree to care for the children all weekend or complete a chore that you know mom finds unpleasant—say washing the windows or weeding the garden, for example. Band Together. Take on a project as a family that you know mom wants to tackle but hasn’t been able to complete by herself. This can mean scraping and painting the fence or cleaning out the garage. You may even work together to create a meal consisting of all mom’s favorites, handling all the cooking—and the clean up. Plant a Garden. Carve out a small area and plant a perennial garden with low maintenance plants. You might even commit to helping care for it. For the mom without a garden space, bring flowering plants in pots to grace the balcony or steps or buy an inexpensive supermarket orchid. Share Memories. Pull together a small photo album filled with special family photos. Include handwritten notes from all those featured that share a favorite memory. For those too little to write or speak, include a hand or footprint. Wash the Car. If it has been awhile since mom has had her car washed and vacuumed, what a lovely little gift it would be to do it for her. Be sure to get all of those hand and nose prints from inside of the windows!
